Housing rehabilitation is a staple of Back Bay Mission’s ministry. This program helps people stay in their homes by making necessary renovations and repairs. Whether someone has lost their home to a fire, needs renovations to make it accessible to someone with a disability, or requires regular maintenance the family can’t afford, we’re there for them.

But we don’t only help people meet their immediate housing needs. We also work with our housing rehabilitation clients learn how to maintain those homes. By working carefully with homeowners and partner organizations, we give people the tools they need for a better future.

Rehabbing Houses on the Mississippi Gulf Coast

The Mississippi Gulf Coast had a tremendous need for our housing rehabilitation ministry. In July of 2015, there were more than 70 projects on our list. Some were active projects, some were recently completed, and many were in the queue. And we continued to get several calls every week from people who needed help.

Because it was going to take so long for us to get to all of those projects, we had to make some hard choices. We contacted 20 homeowners to let them know that we had to take them off the list. Twelve of those were minor projects and the homeowners will be able to reapply; four were for homes where ownership was shared, which aren’t normally eligible for our assistance; and four were for mobile homes where we thought our work wouldn’t contribute to the longterm sustainability of the client.

In order to get the list more manageable, we’ve stopped taking new applications for the time being.

As of the beginning of 2016, the list has 40 projects on it: 10 are in progress and 30 are waiting. Of those, 24 are major projects (including 20 roof replacements), 15 are minor projects, and one is a new construction project.

We expect to be accepting new applications again sometime in 2016.
