It’s my third week at Back Bay Mission and once again it was an eventful week. Filled with sitting in on hard discussions with families in need, seeing environment’s where the community seeks for assistance, small errands and behind the scenes work that is done everyday. The work that is done here by the staff and volunteers could not be done without their strong vision that is stated, and that is “eradicating the sting of poverty and its effects on individuals and communities”. This is done through their many programs, collaborations with other missions and connecting with the community. Everyday I see how much this place here is a community and how you need to work together to achieve their vision and mission.
Every day brings a new possibility of being a person who could help a family or a person get to their next step. Back Bay makes sure that every person that is seeking assistance with a needed resource is meet some how. Either by the resources they can provide or by reaching out to other organizations to see if they can assist. They don’t try to solve everyone’s problems, but gives everyone the opportunity to seek out the resources that are needed and are then held accountable for their actions. Life is hard and all of us fall down, but here at Back Bay Mission they give everyone a chance to help you over that bump in the road.
I’m so grateful that Kenney Washington is my mentor for this internship because he is honest, funny, down to earth and gives great advice about anything that pertains to life. He has shown me how to react to situations that could easily make someone want to pull their hair out and how to see all sides of an argument. I can’t wait to see my personal growth by the time I leave here.
