There is never a dull moment at Back Bay Mission. Today will not be the same as yesterday and you have to learn to take everything as it is. I’m not saying that things are perfect here, but if there are things that need to be improved or adjusted then so be it. Working here you need to have patience, flexibility and able to adjust to things you didn’t expect would happened. Every person that walks in these doors is different including the staff and volunteers. Each person comes with their own personalities and history, but everyone that comes through the Back Bay Mission doors are all here for one reason: opportunities. Those opportunities are different for each person; whether it is to help those who can’t help themselves or to receive a service.
Regardless of why a person is here, I enjoy hearing all perspectives of life. As I get to know the people here a little bit better I’m getting comfortable with my surroundings and how things function and work. I spend great amount of time getting to know the people who work here better by sharing stories about life, Back Bay Mission and advice. Not only do I have conversations with the staff, but clients that get assistance from a variety of services. All of us have a different story to tell, but all of us are going on a journey in this thing we called life. There are some I have many things in common with while others I may have only a few things in common with, but that’s what makes life so exciting.
I’m learning so much about myself that I didn’t realize, like how I can adjust to any situation that comes my way and that will come in handy for this line of work. I think being here by myself without knowing anyone and having to put myself out there has shown me how much ability I have to make it on my own. I’ve traveled to many places, but never have I been anywhere on my own. I think interning here is a way for someone to see how much potential they really have and the impact they could make.
