One week down, nine more to go! My first week at The Back Bay Mission has been a success. Admittedly, I was not sure what to expect coming into the organization, but after my first day I knew that this was going to be a great summer. So far, I have mainly worked in the reception office filing paperwork, answering phones, visiting job sites, and getting to know the staff. The office work has actually been fun and easy thanks to Twila! Answering phone calls have put a lot of what The Back Bay Mission does into perspective for me. Firstly, it is truly a humbling experience for someone to call you, and directly say that they have nowhere to go, and that they need your help. Though I was only supposed to transfer them over to the correct office, I couldn’t help but feel as though I wanted to help them more. I also found it interesting to learn that there are no shelters in all of Biloxi, MS. I also had the opportunity to shadow Kenney and Dr. Graham to some meetings, and also to some of the job sites where the volunteers were fixing some houses. The volunteers were very friendly, and Ashley and I had the opportunity to speak with the group of young ladies about ourselves and our experiences at the internship. In closing, the first week has been a great experience, and I am excited for what the future holds for The Back Bay Mission.
