As Thanksgiving approaches and people across the country prepare to express gratitude for what they have, we’re reminded of the struggles that far too many people face.
People like ‘Sam’ and ‘Rachel’.
Sam and Rachel had what they thought was a good life. Sam worked at an aerospace company. Rachel worked at a casino. They had a nice home, they gave to charitable organizations. But then Sam was injured on the job and, when he couldn’t return to work, laid off. Rachel lost her job because of the time she had to spend caring for her husband. They were denied Social Security Disability.
Their lives changed in the blink of an eye.
Sam now lives with chronic pain. Rachel now lives with anxiety and panic attacks. Together, they live with financial struggle and uncertainty.
One of Rachel’s friends told her about Back Bay Mission. Rachel called us and learned how to get help with their utility bill. After she came to see our emergency assistance caseworker, she left with a check for the balance of the bill.
She told our caseworker, “I don’t know how to thank you, I just don’t know what to say… Bless you, bless you all for what you do.”
There are stories like this every day at Back Bay Mission. You can be a part of one. You can help a homeless family find a home.
You can give a hand up to a struggling family. You can help people on the road to sustainability.
