The 2016 Shari Prestemon Social Justice Interns have graciously agreed to share their experiences with all of us. From time to time, we’ll be posting ‘journal entries’ from Sharell Shippen and Sheryl Garcia. Below is one of these entries.

I did not think Biloxi, Mississippi, would be too different than where I live (Dallas, Texas). Since we are only two states away it would be just like home, right?

Much like Texas, Mississippi is HOT during the summer. Unlike Dallas, Biloxi is on the water, so the humidity really hits you. There have been days where I start to sweat just walking from my house to the building! Aside from the heat, I have enjoyed what little exploring I have done so far and my time at the beach. Though, everyone (and I mean everyone) advised me to NOT get in the water…The weather has been bearable and I think I have Texas to thank for preparing me for that.

Of course one of the biggest differences I have noticed since being here are the accents. I amused to the “y’all” that gets tossed around, but the accent itself is pretty distinct. Being a newbie, the way I talk and my accent is probably what sticks out, but we’re all southern so we mesh well together.

I can say that since being here, I have eaten more seafood than my mind can process. In reality, the amount of seafood I have consumed is small, but for someone who never really enjoyed the taste or smell of it I have eaten quite a bit.

Overall, the weather is bearable, the people are nice, and the food is edible. Eight more weeks of Mississippi life is fine by me!
