Red, White and Blue Initiative

By October 20, 2014No Comments

In a continuing effort to provide care to veterans living in South Mississippi Back Bay Mission is proud to announce its “Red, White and Blue Initiative.” This fund raising campaign will officially begin on 7 November 2014 and last until Veteran’s Day 11 November 2014.

During this five day period the 93 year old Mission will be raising funds to support two of its programs which directly target veterans living in South Mississippi. All proceeds raised from this initiative will be used to exclusively support ‘Project HomePort’ the Mission’s answer to homelessness amongst local veterans as well as the Mission’s newly established Veterans Support Fund will be the exclusive recipients of this fundraising initiative.

Kenney Washington, the Mission’s Interim Executive Director stated, “We’re hoping to partner with local restaurants from 7-11 November in support of this inaugural initiative. We’re asking restaurants who stand with this community in support of our veterans to donate 10-20% of a selected night’s receipts from 7-11 November. The funds received during this period will be a great way to start this fund, and continue what we started with the Supportive Services for Veterans Families Grant.”

Project HomePort, which began in 2012, was the first of its kind in South MS, built to house homeless disabled veterans. Now in 2014 the Mission is almost finished with its second HomePort project which will house six additional veterans. Discussions are already underway for a third home to be built in the near future.

The Mission’s Veterans Support Fund was recently started as a response to the highly successful Supportive Services for Veterans Families Grant. Unfortunately the Department of Veteran Affairs did not renew the impactful grant at Back Bay Mission so the Mission has decided to create the Veterans Support Fund to continue to support local veterans and their families.

“We’re asking that supporters visit our website www.thebackbaymission.org hit the donate now button and designate their gift,” says Derek Eady, Community Relations Director, “Rogers Insurance, INC, located in Gulfport, has already stepped up to sponsor this initiative and I’m believing other coastal businesses will as well.
